Poor Scanning Construction, No duplex support as advertised November 22, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this product after my HP 5610 stopped working. I make heavy use of the ADF scanning and noticed the Epson Workforce 500 was billed as supported duplex printing. Both of these selling points failed to perform as expected and I returned the unit.
There is no duplex printing support on this device. Despite marketing speech to the contrary the only double sided printing support is that a window pops up on your screen requesting you to turn the sheet of paper around to print on the opposite side.
The scanner's document feeder did not perform at all. The construction made it relatively difficult to add standard 8.5 x 11 sheets of paper into the feeder without getting caught on a number of ledges and horizontal barriers meant to keep the paper in alignment. Once the sheet to be scanned was properly inserted the scanner was almost never able to scan a sheet of paper without "slipping" - when this occurred the drive motors continued to move and the scanner portion believe the sheet was sliding past it but in reality the paper was stuck midway thru the scanner.
Don't Be Overwhelmed by the Hype November 21, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this product solely based on the reviews on this site. Five days out of the box, I'm a bit underwhelmed. My dissatisfaction is primarily related to printer setup. Despite the firm assertions of some, you can follow the product's installation instructions to the letter, and still struggle.
It took me upwards of seven hours to finally get the printer fully functional. More than half that time was spent trying to get the software to "find the printer." After wrestling with it for 3 hours, I phoned my cousin, the Technical Professional. It took him about an hour to diagnose that the problem was how my router was connected to my PC. Following the instructions of my VOIP provider, my wireless router was connected to my VOIP device which was connected to my CPU. For the software to be able to find the printer when its connected to your router...apparently the router needs to be connected directly to the CPU. I acknowledge that my atypical configuration (i.e. router to VOIP device to PC) was not Epson's fault...but it would be useful if their troubleshooting tips included an instruction that the router should be directly connected to the CPU.
Once I connected my router to my CPU, the software easily found the printer; however, the printer was never able to automatically establish an IP address. I ultimately pulled up the PDF for my router, found the instruction for assigning a device an IP address, and assigned the printer an IP address.
Once the initial "installation" was complete, I then set out to establish a connection between the printer and my two wireless laptops. Once again I used the software and followed the prescribed instructions, but my laptops never locate the printer via the software. In a fit of desperation, I disobeyed the printer's instructions and went to Windows' control panel, and asked it to find the printer on my network. It took fewer than 5 minutes for Windows to locate the printer and create the connection. (That was for my personal laptop. For my work laptop, I had to define a TCP/IP port to establish a connection--a level of technical acumen that I didn't know I possessed.)
So far, I've processed two modest print jobs. The last print job took something like 10 minutes to print. (It was only two pages.) I'm guessing that the problem was a combination of a couple of things. First, the signal strength from my wireless router is a bit anemic. My wireless devices are only 40-50 feet away from the wireless router...so I don't know what that's about. Second, the printer was in energy saver mode when I processed the print job. I'm hopeful that other print jobs won't take so long.
It's not in my nature to be a contrarian. I want to love this printer...I really do. But five days out of the box, we have yet to warm up to one another.
Just as I expected! November 20, 2008 Evidentally the people spoke and Epson listened. I decided to buy the Epson WorkForce 600 Wireless All-In-One because it met my needs. However, before I 'clicked' the 'One-Click' button I read all the reviews. I noted several remarks about installing the printer wirelessly and what must be done before the printer would print using the wireless mode. I printed out each comment so's to make it easier when I went through the process. But, when the printer arrived at my doorstep and I opened the box all the needed (up-dated) documentation was there for wireless hook-up. Everything was in plain english and easy to follow and, by all means I'm no computer geek. I've got the printer up and running on three computers. The only thing, I cleaned my house during the set-up process so, have a little free time available.
Sleek, capable AIO with some Wireless freedom November 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Right to the details...
^+++ The Pros +++^ + All Black color in satin and flat finishes. Very sleek + Control Panel, Feed Tray, Output Tray and ADF Tray can all be closed-in and adjusted so the entire unit is just a simple cube. Makes for very easy transportation and stowing away. + Wireless-G networking built-in. + RJ45 Ethernet is also built-in if you don't want WiFi + Automatic Document Feeder built-in + Flash Memory Card reader (xD, MS Pro, SD and CF) built-in + Flash Memory Card reader can be shared out over the wireless network + Snappy print speed + Excellent color rendition and detail + Uses a standard computer power cable (if lost, easily replaceable)
^--- The Cons ---^ - Printing from the printer directly, Photos are auto-scaled to fit the page size. If you scan a baseball card and have 8x10 letter paper, the printer will blow-up the image to fill the paper. - From the unit being off to the first printed page can be a few minutes - Scanner lid doesn't have tension-stay springs. Which means you'll have to either use 1 hand to hold the lid up, or prop it up with something while placing documents for scanning
^*** Comments ***^ This AIO unit is an excellent choice for; solid performance in a sleek yet compact package that can be easily moved around and/or stowed away.
I live in a less-than 1,200sq/ft Condo, so space is scarce. This Epson AIO seems to have been built specifically for people like me. Your typical AIO requires being plugged in to the network which means it needs dedicated space that could have been used for something else.
But because of it's built-in Wifi and when all the feeders and trays and such are compacted down, the Epson becomes a nomadic cube that can be easily stowed away. When it's needed, but there's no particular available place to put it, then WiFi gives it the ability to be used in non-conventional places...Like on the coffee table, kitchen counter, heck even on the bed.
This is an excellent choice if you're someone that's tight on space, but still want a sleek and well capable All-In-One system.
A good printer at last November 19, 2008 I seem to go through printers at a remarkable pace. Because of this, I've used a lot of them. With rare exceptions each has had one or more serious drawbacks and each has eventually broken down with my normal use.
When I first heard of the Epson WorkForce 600 it sounded too good to be true and the list price was a little discouraging. When I found that Amazon offered it at a substantial discount, I decided to order it. The printer shipped promptly and was easy to set up. I was dismayed, however, to discover that there were no ink cartridges in the shipment. Assuming that this explained the good price offered by Amazon, I called and was given both an apology and instructions for shipping the printer back so I could receive a replacement. While preparing the printer for shipment, I discovered the ink cartridges carefully encased in one of the pieces of packing material.
I fired off an email to Amazon profusely apologizing and they kindly thanked me without accusing me of being a klutz. The printer, copier, fax is outstanding. It is fast, efficient and easy to use. I'm a believer.
