Product Description From the team that published the critically acclaimed and hugely successful 'Famous Russian Aircraft' series comes a book that is the definitive guide to all of the aircraft flown by the Soviet Air Force in World War II. While most other books on the Soviet Air Force in World War II dwell largely on individual aircraft types, this book also takes a closer look at the Soviet Air Force's structure and aircraft fleet. It includes all of the unit insignia of Soviet air armies, divisions and regiments, as well as the varied artwork and camouflage schemes used on individual aircraft. This book features brief descriptions (including performance data) and many previously unpublished photos and color side views of all the aircraft types that operated in the immediate pre-war years and in World War II, including many British aircraft flown by the Soviet Air Force. The most important combat operations conducted by the Air Force and the Soviet Naval Aviation are described and illustrated by tactical maps. The book also tells about the Soviet Air Force commanders and famous Soviet aces of the period; the aces' aircraft and their personal insignia are illustrated. This is a unique book that will be of interest not only to aviation and military history fans but also to modelers.

Excellent Reference January 8, 2009 Very nice book on a subject which has limited coverage. The majority of the book deals with the aircraft themselves. With many period black and white photos interspersed with detailed color line drawings. Definately not a pure data book, this provides the data along with further information with how the planes handled in different climates and against different aircraft. Each plane has all variations listed and what each new model had that was different from the previous. Smaller sections of the book detail the Soviet warplane industry, the pre-war years, the pilots and the lend lease aircraft. All on high quality gloss paper. This book makes an excellent companion to the Black Cross Red Star series as it details the aircraft while that series details the activities.
Encyclopedic December 27, 2008 This is a great reference book. The bulk of it is a very thorough description of Soviet aircraft of World War II. There is also information about the organization of the Soviet Air Force, production of aircraft, and fighter pilots. Highly recommended if aircraft are your thing. There is nothing on actual operations, so if that's your interest, Christer Bergstrom's books are still the best.
