MY EYES! October 27, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I learned a long time ago that some things are worth a little extra money. I just added flashlights to that list.
I have the usual assortment of decaying flashlights hiding around my house. I have some keychain LEDs, a couple of 9-LED jobs I got for $5, and several old light bulb models including a giant Maglight I keep for self-defense. And while all of them do, in fact, cast light into dark places, the INTOVA puts them all to shame. To be clear, I'm not just using hyperbole when I say that. I had my family conduct a scientific test.
We unearthed every flashlight in the house. Then we installed new batteries (where possible) and cleaned lenses with glass cleaner. Then it was lights out and everyone on the couch. We then shined a broadside of flashlights against the far wall, keeping only the brightest ones for the next round. When we had whittled the field down to the 4 brightest, including the Maglight monster, it was time to turn on the INTOVA. BAM! Its 3 watt snow-white circle of light obliterated the other contenders. You could still see the Maglight, but that's mainly because it was casting a yellowish beam. We then turned on ALL of the other flashlights just for fun but the INTOVA just laughed at them. Ha. Ha.
Of course, it costs more than most of those other flashlights put together - except for the Maglight - but it's anodized aluminum and rated to work up to 400 feet under water. Of course, I'm happy if it still works after being washed by my youngest. It uses non-standard batteries, but at about $1 each I can live with that.
In short, this is a wonderful, compact light that does what you expect, even if you're not diving. But hide your eyes!!!!
good backup diving torch August 30, 2008 excellent backup flashlight for night diving - well made, bright, small. O-rings and the body looks very water-proof. The switch is a bit difficult to operate in gloves. Takes two lithium photo batteries - they are quite cheap on the Internet.
